What to Wear to Your Newborn Session in Augusta, GA

filed in

Outfit questions are one of the things I get asked most before a newborn session. And I completely understand why — you want to look and feel good in these images, but you also don’t want to overthink it or spend a fortune on something you’ll wear once.

The good news is that the formula is simple. Here’s exactly what I recommend for families in the Augusta area.

Start with Soft Neutrals

The single most important thing you can do is keep your palette soft and neutral. Think cream, white, ivory, blush, sage green, soft pinks, warm tan, dusty blue, and soft grey.

These tones photograph beautifully in a studio setting as well as in-home. They also keep the focus exactly where it should be — on your baby. Bright colors, bold patterns, and graphic tees pull the eye away from what matters most.

When everyone in the family sticks to a soft neutral palette, the images feel cohesive, timeless, and genuinely beautiful.

Add One Pop of Color or Pattern

Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring. One of my favorite things is when a family chooses a soft neutral base and then adds one gentle pop of color or a subtle pattern for one person — often a sibling or baby.

Think a soft floral dress on a toddler sister, a pale stripe on a little brother’s outfit, or a gentle sage green romper against cream for everyone else. That one detail adds visual interest without competing with the overall softness of the images.

The key is keeping it subtle. One pop, not three.

A good rule of thumb: if you lay all your outfits out together and they look cohesive, you’re good. If one immediately jumps out as too bright or too busy, swap it.

What Moms Look Best In

For moms, I almost always recommend something flowy, soft, and comfortable. A loose linen dress, a soft wrap dress, a flowy skirt with a simple fitted top — all of these photograph beautifully and feel comfortable during a 2 to 3 hour session.

Fitted options work too, especially if you love how you feel in them. Confidence always shows up in photos. Wear something that makes you feel good about yourself, not just something you think will look “right.”

Avoid anything stiff, structured, or uncomfortable. You’ll be sitting on the floor, holding your baby, and moving around — you want to be able to do all of that without thinking about your clothes.

What Dads Look Best In

For dads, simple always wins. A neutral henley, a soft button-down, or a plain crewneck in a tone that complements mom’s outfit is perfect. Dark jeans or khakis work well for bottoms.

Avoid branded tees, sports jerseys, or anything with large logos. The goal is for your face — not your shirt — to be what people notice.

What About Siblings?

If you’re bringing older siblings, coordinate their outfits with the overall palette but let them have a little personality too. A toddler in a soft floral romper or a little boy in a neutral linen set both work beautifully.

Avoid fully matching sibling outfits — coordinating is always better than matching. Matching can feel stiff; coordinating feels natural and intentional.

What About Baby?

For baby, I provide all wraps, bows, and props as part of your session. If you have a special outfit or keepsake you’d like to include — a hand-knit bonnet, a family heirloom, a special coming-home outfit — just let me know in advance and I’ll build it into the session.
